The Runaway Bridegroom

The Runaway Bridegroom tells of a reluctant marriage to oneself. Drawing from imagery informed by folklore and Catholicism of Costa Rica and Sicily, this series follows a loose narrative of a pair of doppelgängers in bridal costume tied together with a red string representing the ties of the physical self to the spiritual. An allegory of coming of age with an intersectional identity, the brides, modeled after the artist. embark on a journey confronting their ancestors and themselves as they transform into monstrous women, legends and saints as they search for where they belong and accept their union.

Its final multidimensional form consists of 18 x 24 inch watercolor paintings displayed in frames embellished with lace and collected relics referencing homemade shrines and nichos of Latin America. Ultimately living in a room accented with sculptural assemblage installations harkening back to memories of fairytales and Costa Rican farmhouses, this folkloric setting explores the themes of biracial identity, girlhood, and belonging as an acceptance of self.
